“Is it the sins of my parents?”
Religion and Disability in Conversation
At face value, many religions today promote inclusion, equal access, and the protection of the dignity of persons with disabilities. However, historically, most religious societies stigmatized and excluded persons with disabilities – teaching the belief that persons with disabilities were cursed or punished. In some religious communities today, the belief that persons with disabilities are still in need of saving is continued – opening the door to questionable beliefs and practices. This paper sets itself within this context, to contribute to challenging religious values pertaining to persons with disabilities.
